City Named a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Business - COUNCIL NOTE
City Encourages Employees to Bike to Work
This Spring the League of American Bicyclists recognized the City of San Luis Obispo with a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Business (BFBSM) award.
The City joins a cutting-edge group of 1,315 local businesses, government agencies, and Fortune 500 companies in 49 states and Washington, D.C., that are transforming the American workplace. “The business community’s investment in bicycling is playing a central role in making the country a safer, happier, and more sustainable place to live and work,” said Amelia Neptune, Director of the Bicycle Friendly America program. “We applaud this new round of businesses, including the City of San Luis Obispo, for leading the charge in creating a bicycle-friendly America for everyone.”
Bicycling helps the City reduce air pollution and fight climate change. The City encourages bicycling as an option for employees for transportation and provides amenities such as shower facilities, earned extra vacation time and incentives such as a growing fleet of bikes for worker use while on the job.
Moving forward, the City will have access to a variety of tools and technical assistance from the League to become even more bicycle-friendly. When our employees bike, great things happen: fewer sick days and reduced healthcare costs, improved morale and work productivity, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions in support of the City’s Climate Action Plan goals.
The City is also a recipient of the League’s Bicycle Friendly Community Designation, which evaluates not only employee facilities and policies, but all City facilities and policies. In 2015, the City was awarded the Bicycle Friendly Community Designation at the Gold Level.
